Using MMPKs in the Field

Purpose/Overview

This article explains how field users can access and use Mobile Map Package (MMPK) files (in the Legacy mobile or the desktop app) while working in the field, whether or not an internet connection is available. MMPKs allow you to view important maps, layers, and location data offline, helping you stay productive in remote or low-connectivity areas.

If you are on an Android or iOS device, download and open the Utilisphere app. In order to access this feature from the Utilisphere desktop application, you must have it downloaded to your computer. If you don't have it installed on your desktop, go to Utilisphere > Help > Downloads, select Click Here under Utilisphere desktop

Key Benefits/Use Cases:

  • Work Anywhere: Continue using map data and tools even in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi access.
  • Visual Context in the Field: Use basemaps and data layers to understand your location and surroundings during inspections, locates, or emergency response.

Things to Know:

  • Permissions: MMPKs must be uploaded by an administrator before field users can access them.

  • Pre-requisite: To successfully load an MMPK, your device must remain fully connected to the internet until the download is complete. Once downloaded, you can work offline.
  • Device Requirements: Available on supported mobile devices running the UtiliSphere mobile app.

  • Limitations: MMPK files that include attribute tables will not load.

How It Works:

An MMPK is a single file that bundles together maps and their data, designed for use offline. Think of it as a pre-packaged map that you can interact with even when you don’t have internet access. MMPKs are ideal for fieldwork in areas without connectivity.

  1. Log in to the Utilisphere mobile app on your device or open the Utilisphere desktop app and sign in.

  2. Click the 3 lines on the upper-left side of the screen and navigate to Settings

  3. On your mobile device, select the Maps tab and click the name of the MMPK file you want to use. The file will begin downloading to your device. Once downloaded, it will be available even when you're offline.
On your desktop app, while you have access to the internet, select the Map tab and click the Add MMPK button to find the map you want to use. Once added, it will be available in the Layer Picker even when you’re offline.

  4. Use the Map in the Field
With the MMPK downloaded, you can now:

  • View basemaps and layers

  • Use pop-ups and labels configured by your admin

  • Navigate and identify features in the field
